The Example of SportWay

Sports are much more than competition, trophies, and medals. They are a powerful tool for inclusion, empowerment, and personal growth. For people who face social, economic, or physical challenges, sports can become a safe space where they can rebuild confidence, learn teamwork, and discover their strengths.
This is the philosophy behind SportWay – Sport Play for Winning the Way, a European Erasmus+ project that brings together partners from Italy, Slovenia, and Austria. SportWay organizes inclusive sports events, workshops, and training sessions to show that everyone – regardless of ability, background, or life experience – can participate and feel part of a community.
Again, sports have the unique ability to transform lives. Beyond the scores, medals, and championships, sports represent freedom, resilience, and the possibility of starting again. For those facing challenges – whether economic hardship, disability, social exclusion, or personal struggles – sports can become a powerful tool for growth and a path toward confidence and opportunity.
Sports can help people from disadvantaged groups in many ways:
- Building Confidence: Joining a sports activity helps participants set goals and achieve them step by step. Whether it is learning to throw a frisbee, scoring a goal, or simply completing a training session, every achievement builds self-esteem and resilience.
- Creating Opportunities: SportWay promotes access to different sports such as inclusive rugby, adapted rowing, and creative workshops combining movement and music. These activities can open doors to new friendships, volunteering opportunities, and even future careers in sports and education.
- Promoting Health and Well-Being: Regular exercise improves both physical and mental health. For people who might feel isolated, sports also reduce stress, anxiety, and the sense of loneliness, replacing them with joy and energy.
- Strengthening Communities: One of SportWay’s key missions is to bring local schools, sports clubs, associations, and municipalities together. Inclusive tournaments and events, like the “6InSuperAbile” festival in Possagno, create spaces where people with and without disabilities play side by side, breaking down barriers and stereotypes.

From the Playing Field to Self-Esteem
One of the first things you notice at a SportWay event is the diversity of participants. Teenagers, adults, children, and even seniors share the same playing fields. Some are experienced athletes; others are trying a sport for the very first time. Many participants live with disabilities or come from disadvantaged contexts where access to sports is not a given.
“Sports have an incredible power to break barriers,” explains one of the SportWay organizers. “When a young person who has been struggling at school scores a goal during an inclusive rugby match, you can literally see their posture change. They stand taller. They smile. They feel capable.”
Building self-esteem is one of the cornerstones of the project. Every game, every challenge, every small victory contributes to developing confidence. The goal is not only to play but to transfer these positive feelings into everyday life: returning to school with renewed motivation, feeling more confident in job interviews, or simply believing in one’s own potential.
Opportunities Beyond the Field
SportWay is not just about sports practice; it is about creating opportunities. Participants discover new sports, meet professional coaches, and interact with volunteers and mentors. Some get involved in organizing events or become ambassadors for inclusion in their schools or communities.
Workshops often combine sports with other activities such as music, art, or storytelling. During the “6InSuperAbile” event in Possagno (Italy), young people participated in adaptive sports such as wheelchair basketball and inclusive frisbee, but also in creative laboratories where they could express themselves through art and music. The message is clear: inclusion is not limited to physical activity but extends to all areas of culture and life.

Health, Well-Being, and Connection
For people from disadvantaged groups, health is often an overlooked dimension. Sedentary lifestyles, isolation, and stress can lead to both physical and psychological problems. SportWay combats this by promoting regular exercise in a supportive environment.
Exercise is known to release endorphins, reduce anxiety, and improve mood. But what makes SportWay special is the sense of community it builds. Participants do not just work on their bodies; they also build friendships, learn to collaborate, and feel part of something bigger. This social component is particularly important for people who may have felt excluded or alone.

Changing Perceptions
SportWay’s events also work on a broader cultural level. By bringing together people with and without disabilities, the project helps dismantle stereotypes and prejudices. Spectators and participants witness firsthand that ability is not defined by physical limits but by spirit, creativity, and determination.
Seeing a mixed team of athletes – some in wheelchairs, some standing – celebrate together after a match sends a powerful message: inclusion is possible, and it benefits everyone.
A Model for the Future
The SportWay project shows how local initiatives can have a European impact. By connecting partners from different countries, SportWay creates a network that shares good practices, develops new methods of inclusive training, and inspires communities across borders.
As Europe prepares for events like the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, the work of SportWay is a reminder that sports should be accessible to all, not only to elite athletes. Projects like this one create the conditions for young people – especially those at risk of social exclusion – to discover sports as a pathway to personal development, education, and even employment.
More Than Just a Game
At its heart, SportWay is about much more than sports. It is about giving people the chance to dream, to participate, and to take control of their own story. It is about transforming a football match, a rowing session, or a frisbee throw into a life lesson about perseverance, respect, and inclusion.
The project’s name says it all: Sport Play for Winning the Way. Through play, we learn how to navigate life’s challenges. Through inclusion, we win not just games but futures.

“…Sport has the power to change lives — and with SportWay, everyone can be a winner…”
